Turbinolia armata was named by Michelotti (1838).

It was recombined as Trochocyathus armatus by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1848); it was recombined as Odontocyathus armatus by Hegedus (1959); it was recombined as Trochocyathus (Aplocyathus) armatus by Chevalier (1961).
