Leptoceras was named by Uhlig (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: K Berr-u K Vala-u]. Its type is Ancyloceras brunneri.

It was reranked as Crioceras (Leptoceras) by Uhlig (1883).

It was assigned to Crioceras by Uhlig (1883); to Leptoceratinae by Manolov (1962); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Protancyloceratidae by Klein et al. (2007).
