Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
A. Nuñez-Blasco et al. 2023Glyptodont similar in size to E. solidus (Table S3). In frontal view, the nasal openings are sub-rectangular with curved maxillary margins, similar to Doedicurus but different from E. solidus in which the maxillary margins are straight. In dorsal view, the rostral area is sub-triangular; the zygomatic arches are anteriorly wider than pos- teriorly. In lateral view, the posterior margin of the orbital notch is vertical, delimiting an angle with respect to the palatal plane of ca. 90°, as in E. solidus; but E. antiquus has a marked bony ridge on the ventral margin of the orbital notch, very similar to Doedicurus. In occlusal view, the palates are transversally expanded at the level of Mf1, as in Doedicurus and both are more expanded than in E. solidus. The ornamentation pattern of the osteoderms of the dorsal carapace is very similar to E. solidus, but with the large foramina more clustered in the central region of each osteoderm and fewer small foramina.
