Taxonomy
Heliastrea inaequalis was named by von Guembel (1861). Its type locality is Monte Carlotta, which is in a Rupelian perireef or subreef limestone in the Castelgomberto Formation of Italy.

It was recombined as Montastrea inaequalis by Barta-Calmus (1973).
