Taxonomy
Isastrea profunda was named by Reuss (1854). It is not extant.

It was recombined as Heterastraea profunda by Punina (1997); it was recombined as Gablonzeria profunda by Stanley (1986), Stanley (1994), Turnsek (1997), Onoue and Stanley (2008) and Caruthers and Stanley (2008).
