Taxonomy
Sauria was named by Gauthier (1984) [non MacCartney 1802]. It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Gauthier et al. (1988) and deBraga and Rieppel (1997).

It was assigned to Diapsida by Gauthier et al. (1988) and Gauthier et al. (1989); to Reptilia by Norell and de Queiroz (1991); and to Neodiapsida by deBraga and Rieppel (1997) and Senter (2004).
