Polyplacus kilmeri was named by Durham (1967). Its type specimen is UCMP 14767 and is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Polyplacus.

Durham 1967Test broadly pyriform when retracted, about 50mm tall; pleats produced into regular conical projections every 2.5 to 4 mm near middle of test; individual pleats rise at least 2.5 mm above floor of adjacent valleys near middle of test; individual plates in mosaic range from minute up to 0.8 mm in greatest dimension; some of conical projections of pleats rise nearly 1 mm.
