Gastrochaenolites torpedo was named by Kelly and Bromley (1984). It is extant. Its type specimen is BMNH 56735, an other. Its type locality is Kankesanthurai [Jaffna Limestone], which is in a Burdigalian shallow subtidal limestone in the Jaffna Limestone Formation of Sri Lanka.
