Taxonomy
Physonemus altonensis was named by St. John and Worthen (1875). It is the type species of Stethacanthus.

It was recombined as Stethacanthus altonensis by Newberry (1889), Hay (1902), Eastman (1903), Williams (1985) and Ivanov and Lebedev (2014).
