Taxonomy
Mathoceras was named by Casey (1963) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti-u]. Its type is Hoplites (Kilianella) matho. It is the type genus of Mathoceratinae.

It was assigned to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Mathoceratinae by Renz (1982), Wright et al. (1996), Szives (2007) and Barragán and Szives (2007).
