Taxonomy
Sphenodus recurvus was named by Trautschold (1877).

It was recombined as Synechodus recurvus by Woodward (1889), Dalinkevičius (1935) and Herman (1977); it was recombined as Paraorthacodus recurvus by Cvancara and Hoganson (1993), Siverson (1997), Underwood and Mitchell (1999), Rees (2000) and Sokolskyi and Guinot (2021).
