Tethyoceramus was named by Sornay (1980). Its type is Inoceramus (Tethyoceramus) basseae.

It was reranked as Inoceramus (Tethyoceramus) by Sornay (1980).

It was assigned to Inoceramus by Sornay (1980); and to Inoceramidae by Walaszczyk et al. (2004), Stilwell and Gallagher (2009) and Walaszczyk (2018).
