Taxonomy
Hybodus basanus was named by Egerton (1845). Its type specimen is Museum of Practical Geology, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Orthybodus basanus by Jaekel (1898); it was recombined as Egertonodus basanus by Maisey (1987) and Underwood and Rees (2002).
