Bethylus was named by Latreille (1802). It is extant. It is the type genus of Bethylidae, Bethylinae.

It was assigned to Cleptiosa by Latreille (1802); to Bethylinae by Ashmead (1893) and Kieffer (1905); and to Bethylidae by Carpenter (1992).
