Ctenobethylus was named by Brues (1939).

It was synonymized subjectively with Iridomyrmex by Brown (1976).

It was assigned to Formicidae by Sorg (1988); to Bethylidae by Brues (1939) and Carpenter (1992); to Dolichoderini by Bolton (2003); and to Tapinomini by Bolton (2012).
