Anthophyllum turbinatum was named by Münster (1829).

It was recombined as Montlivaltia turbinata by Milne-Edwards and Haime (1857); it was recombined as Pleurosmilia turbinata by Becker and Milaschewitsch (1876); it was recombined as Axosmilia turbinata by Geyer (1954).
