Favia baumbergeri was named by Koby (1897).

It was recombined as Ellipsocoenia baumbergeri by Sikharulidze (1979); it was recombined as Ovalastrea baumbergeri by Morycowa and Marcopoulou-Diacantoni (2002); it was recombined as Latiastrea baumbergeri by Baron-Szabo (2009).
