Thaumatodryinus was named by Perkins (1905). It is extant. It is the type genus of Thaumatodryininae.

It was assigned to Dryinidae by Carpenter (1992); to Dryininae by Olmi and Bechly (2001); and to Thaumatodryininae by Tribull (2015).
