Myrmosa was named by Latreille (1796). It is extant. It is the type genus of Myrmosinae, Myrmosini.

It was assigned to Hymenoptera by Latreille (1796); to Mutillariae by Latreille (1802); to Mutillidae by Piton (1940); to Tiphiidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Myrmosini by Brothers (2003).
