Mutilla was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type genus of Mutillinae, Mutillini, Mutillariae, Mutillina.
It was assigned to Aculeata by Scopoli (1763); to Hymenoptera by Linnaeus (1758), Linnaeus (1761), Müller (1764), Linnaeus (1767), Müller (1776) and Latreille (1796); to Mutillariae by Latreille (1802); to Mutillidae by Carpenter (1992); to Mutillina by Brothers and Lelej (2017); and to Mutillini by Brothers (2003) and Waldren et al. (2023).
