Platythyrea was named by Roger (1863). It is extant. It is the type genus of Platythyreini.
It was assigned to Formicidae by Carpenter (1992); to Ponerinae by Aria et al. (2011); and to Platythyreini by Bolton (2003), Bolton (2012) and Schmidt and Shattuck (2014).
