Prionomyrmex was named by Mayr (1868). It is the type genus of Prionomyrmicini.
It was assigned to Formicidae by Carpenter (1992); to Myrmeciinae by Archibald et al. (2006); and to Prionomyrmecini by Bolton (2003) and Bolton (2012).
