Sphecomyrma was named by Wilson and Brown (1967). Its type is Sphecomyrma freyi. It is the type genus of Sphecomyrminae, Sphecomyrmini.
It was assigned to Formicidae by Carpenter (1992); to Sphecomyrmini by Bolton (2003), Bolton (2012) and Borysenko (2017); and to Sphecomyrminae by Wilson and Brown (1967), Wilson (1985), Engel and Grimaldi (2005) and Boudinot et al. (2020).
