Palaeovespa was named by Cockerell (1906). It is not extant. Its type is Palaeovespa florissantia.
It was assigned to Vespidae by Cockerell (1906), Cockerell (1911), Carpenter (1992) and Poinar (2005); and to Vespinae by Nel and Auvray (2006) and Perrard et al. (2016).
