Pompilidae was named by Latreille (1804). It is extant. Its type is Pompilus. It is the type family of Pompiloidea.

It was assigned to Pompiloidea by Rasnitsyn (1975); to Apocrita by Carpenter (1992); and to Vespoidea by Cockerell (1906), Brothers (1999), Wappler (2003), Sharkey (2007) and Archibald et al. (2018).
