Taxonomy
Pompilidae was named by Latreille (1804). It is extant. Its type is Pompilus.

It was assigned to Apocrita by Carpenter (1992); to Pompiloidea by Rasnitsyn (1975) and Pilgrim et al. (2008); and to Vespoidea by Cockerell (1906), Brothers (1999), Wappler (2003), Sharkey (2007) and Archibald et al. (2018).
