Whitehouse (1926: p. 234) claims to introduce this genus, but subsequent authors (e.g., Aguirre Urreta and Riccardi 1998) consider Whitehouse's definition more an emended definition to a subset of coiling styles rather than a formal naming of a new genus name.

Myloceras was named by Spath (1925) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u].
