Taxonomy
Anthidium was named by Fabricius (1805). It is extant. It is the type genus of Anthidiinae, Anthidiina.

It was assigned to Xylocopinae by Statz (1936); to Megachilidae by Cockerell (1906) and Carpenter (1992); to Anthidiina by Engel (2001); and to Anthidiini by Zeuner and Manning (1976) and Gonzalez et al. (2012).
