Lithurge was named by Latreille (1825). It is extant. It is the type genus of Lithurginae, Lithurgini.

It was assigned to Hymenoptera by Cockerell (1909); to Lithurginae by Zeuner and Manning (1976); to Megachilidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Lithurgini by Engel (2001).
