Newmarracarroceras was named by Hall (1989) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo-l]. Its type is Ammonites (Dorsetensia) clarkei.

It was assigned to Sonniniidae by Hall (1989); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Witchelliinae by Howarth (2013).
