Ammonites (Oecotraustes) was named by Waagen (1869) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo-l J Call-m]. Its type is Oecotraustes genicularis.

It was Oppelia (Oecotraustes) by Waagen (1875) and Besnosov and Mitta (1993); it was misspelled as Oekotraustes by Parona and Bonarelli (1895); it was reranked as Oecotraustes by Arkell et al. (1957), Sepkoski (2002), Majidifard (2015) and Seyed-Emami et al. (2018).

It was assigned to Ammonites by Waagen (1869); to Ammonitida by Parona and Bonarelli (1895); to Oppelia by Waagen (1875) and Besnosov and Mitta (1993); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); to Oppeliinae by Arkell et al. (1957) and Majidifard (2015); and to Oppeliidae by Seyed-Emami et al. (2018).
