Onitshoceras was named by Reyment (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: K Coni]. Its type is Onitshoceras matsumotoi.

It was assigned to Desmoceratidae by Reyment (1954) and Reyment (1955); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Desmoceratinae by Kennedy (1984) and Kennedy (2018).
