Palaeophragmodictya reticulata was named by Gehling and Rigby (1996). Its type specimen is SAM P32324 and is an impression. Its type locality is Locality 1, Chace Range, - Gehling and Rigby 1996, which is in an Ediacaran delta front sandstone in the Rawnsley Quartzite Formation of Australia.
