Sepiidae was named by Keferstein (1866). It is extant. Its type is Sepia.

It was assigned to Sepiophora by Kretzoi (1942); to Sepiida by Schevill (1950), Jeletzky (1966) and Doyle et al. (1994); and to Sepioidea by Boyle and Rodhouse (2005).
