Pachyceras was named by Bayle (1878) [Sepkoski's age data: J Call-u J Oxfo-l]. Its type is Ammonites lalandeanus. It is the type genus of Pachyceratidae.
It was assigned to Pachyceratidae by Arkell (1952) and Arkell et al. (1957); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
