Taxonomy
Asterias aranciaca was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Astropecten.

It was recombined as Astropecten aranciacus by Borghi (1995); it was recombined as Astropecten aranciaca by Donovan et al. (2005).
