Echinus rosaceus was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Diplothecanthus rosaceus by Clark and Twitchell (1915); it was recombined as Clypeaster rosaceus by Sanchez Roig (1926), Cooke (1942), Durham (1961) and Donovan et al. (2005).
