Colymbetes was named by Clairville (1806). It is extant. It is the type genus of Colymbetinae.
It was assigned to Hydrocanthares by Dejean (1821); to Dytiscidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Colymbetini by LeConte (1861), Nilsson (2001) and Bouchard et al. (2011).
