Schistomerus was named by Palmer (1957). It is not extant. Its type is Schistomerus californense. It is the type genus of Schistomerini.

It was assigned to Schistomerini by Palmer (1957) and Nilsson (2001); and to Dytiscidae by Carpenter (1992) and Park and Downing (2001).
