Taxonomy
Saccocoma cretacea was named by Bather (1924). It is the type species of Applinocrinus.

It was recombined as Saccocoma (Saccoma) cretacea by Rasmussen (1961); it was recombined as Applinocrinus cretacea by Donovan et al. (1993); it was recombined as Applinocrinus cretaceus by Jagt and Odin (2001) and Hess and Messing (2011).
