Scydmaenus was named by Latreille (1802). It is extant. It is the type genus of Scydmaenides, Scydmaenitae, Scydmaenini.
It was assigned to Scydmaenidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Scydmaenini by Latreille (1802), Newton and Franz (1998), Bouchard et al. (2011) and Yin and Cai (2019).
