Helioceratops was named by Jin et al. (2009). Its type is Helioceratops brachygnathus.
It was assigned to Neoceratopsia by Jin et al. (2009), Amiot et al. (2010) and Farke et al. (2014); and to Leptoceratopsidae by Morschhauser et al. (2019).
