Phylloptychoceras was named by Spath (1953) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 971]. Its type is Ptychoceras sipho.

It was assigned to Diplomoceratidae by Spath (1953); to Polyptychoceratinae by Ward and Kennedy (1993); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
