Taxonomy
Torpedo egertoni was named by de Zigno (1878). It is the type species of Plesiozanobatus.

It was recombined as Platyrhina egertoni by Jaekel (1894) and Carnevale et al. (2014); it was recombined as Plesiozanobatus egertoni by Marramà et al. (2020).
