Narcobatus giganteus was named by de Blainville (1818).

It was recombined as Torpedo gigantea by Agassiz (1835); it was recombined as Platyrhina giganteus by Jaekel (1894); it was recombined as Platyrhina gigantea by Eastman (1904) and Carnevale et al. (2014).
