Platylenticeras was named by Hyatt (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: K Vala-l Sepkoski's reference number: 302]. It is not extant. Its type is Oxynoticeras heteropleurum.

It was assigned to Coilopoceratidae by Hyatt (1903); to Craspeditidae by Wright (1952); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
