Plesiacanthoceras was named by Haas (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-m K Ceno-u Sepkoski's reference number: 901]. Its type is Metoicoceras wyomingense.

It was reranked as Dunveganoceras (Plesiacanthoceras) by Wright (1996).

It was assigned to Acanthoceratinae by Kennedy and Cobban (1990); to Dunveganoceras by Wright (1996); to Mammitinae by Cooper (1998); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
