Phyllocoenia cyclops was named by Felix (1891).

It was recombined as Complexastrea cyclops by Reyeros-Navarro (1963); it was recombined as Diploastrea cyclops by Löser (2006); it was recombined as Haldonia cyclops by Baron-Szabo (2009).
