Ptomaphagus was named by Illiger (1798). It is extant. It is the type genus of Ptomaphagini.

It was assigned to Eleutherata by Illiger (1798); to Silphidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Ptomaphagina by Bouchard et al. (2011).
