Pictetia was named by Uhlig (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti K Albi]. Its type is Crioceras astierianum.

It was assigned to Lytoceratidae by Rodda and Murphy (1992); to Lytoceratinae by Wright et al. (1996); to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002); to Ancyloceratoidea by Lehmann et al. (2013); and to Hamitidae by Hoffmann et al. (2013) and Lehmann et al. (2016).
